Why you should keep learning as an adult
It’s Adult Learners Week (18 – 24 September). Learning is essential to life and self-development, which does not stop when you reach adulthood. Continuous learning challenges your mind, and stimulates neurons when you learn new skills, allowing you to learn better.
Even as an adult, it is crucial to continue to learn and develop your skills; we have put together the key reasons you should keep learning.
Enjoy learning on your terms
Secondary school was not an enjoyable experience for everyone, and learning sometimes, preferentiality or through necessity, took a backseat to individual circumstances. Children in the UK must study various subjects throughout their educational journey; some are more challenging than others.
Learning as an adult allows you to choose your own path; whether your learning leads to a career, personal development, or is linked to a hobby, you decide.
Keep your skills relevant
There are always new technological advancements and developments in industries that can be hard to keep up with. What we learnt in Secondary school is still relevant, but we can always do more to evolve our skills. Learning can take many forms, from continued professional development and mini-courses to enrolling on regulated qualifications.
Improve your memory and brain health
Keeping your mind active and challenged trains your brain by sharpening your memory and maintaining cognitive skills. Research has shown that lifetime cognitive learning might delay the onset of age-related cognitive impairment. Whatever your age or life stage, consistently learning new skills and enhancing your knowledge has excellent health advantages.
Boost confidence and stay social
Education uses many skills and challenges your ability to communicate, make decisions and accept feedback. All of these skills require confidence in your knowledge. Not only will this boost your self-esteem, but using communication and collaboration in learning will keep you social.
