This apprenticeship standard is committed to the safety and welfare of horses, and apprentices will prove capable of looking after a small to medium-sized equine yard and supervising a diverse team of workers. They must have a sound base of experience, knowledge and proper empathy to promote the horses’ physical and psychological wellbeing within a safe working environment.

Occupational routes for this apprenticeship include: 

  • Breeding

  • Driving

  • Racing

  • Riding

  • Non-riding

Assessment methods:

  • The Knowledge Test is completed in exam conditions and has 45 multiple-choice questions and five extended answer questions. It is taken online and remotely invigilated.

    Duration: 90 minutes

    Location: A suitable location as per VetSkill’s Remote Invigilation Policy

    Graded: Fail / Pass / Distinction

  • The apprentice will be observed carrying out tasks relating to their day-to-day role that allow them to demonstrate their Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs).

    Duration: 6 hours

    Location: Usually held in the workplace

    Graded: Pass / Distinction

  • This is a structured interview between the apprentice and the independent assessor, allowing the apprentice to demonstrate core and specific Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs).

    This assessment takes place after the Knowledge Test and Practical Observation.

    Duration: 75-90 minutes

    Location: Usually held in the workplace

    Graded: Pass / Distinction
