Veterinary nursing is the supportive care of animals receiving treatment within a veterinary practice. A veterinary nurse works as a veterinary team member, providing expert nursing care for sick animals whilst playing a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets. They carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures under veterinary direction.

Veterinary nurses are registered professionals and work within the standards and scope of practice defined by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

To support apprentices in preparing for end-point assessment, we provide:

  • Handbooks for training providers, employers and apprentices that cover assessment methods, preparation and requirements checklists, advice and what to expect on assessment day.

  • Sample assessments

  • Training provider sessions

  • An optional EPA OSCE meeting for candidates

Assessment methods:

  • The Practical Assessment is in the form of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The apprentice will be observed performing a 12-station OSCE, each station lasting eight minutes. The Practical Assessment will allow them to demonstrate their Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) in a simulated work environment.

Duration: 3-3.5 hours (including briefing, assessment and debriefing)

    Location: VetSkill approved site

    Graded: Pass / Fail

  • This is a structured discussion between the apprentice and the independent assessor, taking place under controlled conditions. It allows the apprentice to demonstrate their Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) synoptically. Ten competency questions are asked during the discussion, and these are taken from a bank that samples five thematic areas.

    Duration: 45 minutes

    Location: Usually held online, remotely

    Graded: Pass / Distinction
