This qualification has been designed for learners whose role includes assisting Veterinary Surgeons in the care of companion animals undergoing sedation or anaesthesia. Learners will be working within a veterinary care environment, holding either employed or voluntary positions.

This regulated qualification is aimed at those who wish to expand their underpinning knowledge and practical skills in relation to assisting in the monitoring of sedated or anaesthetised companion animals, under the direction, supervision and guidance of a Veterinary Surgeon.

The units contained within this qualification have been rigorously developed to include the essentials for working within the sector legally, professionally and ethically, whilst supporting the development of theoretical knowledge, complemented by the necessary practical skills and techniques.

On completion of this qualification, the learner will achieve the following units:

  • Principles of Assisting Veterinary Surgeons with the Monitoring of Anaesthetised and Sedated Companion Animals 

  • Practical Skills for Assisting Veterinary Surgeons with the Monitoring of Anaesthetised and Sedated Companion Animals

  • Undertake and Review Work-related Experience when Assisting Veterinary Surgeons with the Monitoring of Anaesthetised and Sedated Companion Animals 


  • This qualification is available to learners of 16 years of age and over.

    There are no other formal or specific academic or learning entry requirements for learners undertaking this programme. The nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that learners will require basic literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Multiple-Choice Online Examination

    There is one online multiple-choice examination to assess underpinning knowledge. This is set and marked by VetSkill.

    Portfolio of Evidence

    Throughout the qualification, learners will complete a portfolio of practical and written evidence, to include a work-based assessment pack. These will demonstrate the assessment of their practical competency and underpinning knowledge and understanding. This is assessed and internally quality assured by the centre, and externally quality assured by VetSkill.
